Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge 2002 Fact Sheet
Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) runners from 20 states will run in the 106th Boston Marathon on April 15, with a goal of raising $3 million for the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Here are some facts about the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge:
- This year marks the 13th annual running of the DFMC.
- More than $13 million has been raised since the DFMC's inception in 1990, thanks to the support of the Boston Athletic Association through its charity program. This program gives official Boston Marathon entries to the DFMC.
- DFMC runners include cancer survivors and patients, and family and friends of those who have been affected by cancer. Runners from all over the country participate to help put an end to cancer, including runners who are time-qualified to compete in the Boston Marathon.
- The Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research was founded by Jacksonville Jaguars owners Wayne and Delores Weaver in 1987 to honor Mrs. Weaver's mother, who lost her battle with cancer 30 years earlier.
- One hundred percent of the money raised goes directly to fund the research of the Claudia Adams Barr Investigators.
- Currently, there are eight Barr Investigators. These researchers are conducting promising, diverse investigations in four primary areas: adult oncology, biostatistical science, cancer biology, and pediatric oncology. Two former Barr Investigators are DFMC runners. There have been a total of more than 60 Barr Investigators since the Barr Program's inception in 1987.
- The Patient Partner Program is a cornerstone of the DFMC. Thirty current and former Jimmy Fund Clinic patients are paired with DFMC runners. The children serve as motivation for the runners. For the young patients, their new friendships with DFMC runners provide a unique and special focus outside their illnesses.
