Charity, Comedy, and Sports Combine to Help Strike Out Cancer, Aug. 25 & 26

WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon has events for everyone

This year's WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon will be the biggest all-star affair in the three-year history of the event. The Boston Red Sox, WEEI 850-AM Sports Radio, New England Sports Network (NESN) and the Jimmy Fund are joining forces to raise $2 million for cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The event will get underway on Thursday, Aug. 25, with the Cocktails & Comedy Kick Off at Game On! Restaurant at Fenway Park from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The night will feature stand-up comedy and spirited conversation with guest emcee-comedian Mike O'Malley from the hit show "Yes, Dear," as well as WEEI and NESN personalities, professional athletes and celebrities. Tickets for the evening cost $150. There will also be an "Auction of Legends" with the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind sports experiences and memorabilia while watching the Red Sox on one of Game On!'s 62 HDTVs as NESN broadcasts the Boston-Kansas City game beginning at 8 p.m.

The 18-hour radio-telethon will be broadcast live on WEEI and NESN beginning at 6 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 26, with celebrity guests and callers as well as personal stories of the patients, doctors and researchers supported by the Jimmy Fund.

At 8 a.m., in Fenway's .406 Club, the Sports Survivors' Breakfast will give people the chance to have breakfast alongside some of the world's top athletes who have beaten cancer to stay at the top of their respective games. WEEI's Dennis and Callahan will moderate a question-and-answer session with the athletes. Tickets to the breakfast are $75.

Lunch with the Legends will also take place in the .406 Club beginning at noon. For $75, participants can dine with present and past members of the Red Sox. A panel discussion moderated by WEEI's Dale and Holley will feature Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley and all-star pitcher Luis Tiant and former MVP Jim Rice.

While the radio-telethon continues through that night's Red Sox game against the Detroit Tigers, fans can mingle with professional athletes and celebrities during the Diehards & Legends event in Game On! Restaurant. Beginning at 4:30 p.m., and running until 11 p.m., party-goers can watch WEEI's live broadcast of "The Big Show," with Big "O" Glenn Ordway and his famous Whiner Line, then stay to watch the Red Sox-Tigers game on Game On!'s bevy of televisions.

The Diehards & Legends event costs $100 per person. There is also an MVP package for $406, which includes tickets to all four events on Thursday and Friday and a ticket to the Red Sox game on Friday.

To purchase tickets go online to or call Kerri Stanley at (617) 632-5008. Those that can't make it to Fenway Park can tune in to WEEI 850 AM and NESN to experience the day's events and give by calling 1-877-738-1234 or going online.
